Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.

Burning Basket of Non-Separation

Canasta Quemante de No Separacion
February 2008 - Columbus, New Mexico & Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico

A 6'  woven basket sculpture, a heart with rainbow, was created by Mavis Muller at Our Lady of Las Palomas Retreat Center, Columbus, New Mexico. It was 15th in the series and included plants gathered from the local desert environment including yucca, palm, desert grass, greasewood, and agave. It was named Unity - Basket of Non-Separation.

Unity; state of being united, oneness, a unified group, not separated.

The basket creation also included members of an art co-operative, Cooperative de Familia, in the neighboring border town of Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico who contributed long braids of rainbow colored fabric to be woven into the design of the large heart basket.

A circular walking labyrinth made with rocks & other items was also collaboratively created as a permanent interactive installation.

The basket and labyrinth were a given as a gift to the US and Mexico communities and all were invited to interact in the theme of togetherness, well wishes & releasing.

At sundown, Unity - Basket of Non-Separation was ignited with positive thoughts that  communities will not be separated by distance, by culture, by language, by poverty, or injustice of escalating border violence.

Note: This action of art was in collaboration with communities on the island of Maui, Hawaii, where a similar basket sculpture, a heart with wings created by Mavis Muller also burned at sundown on the same evening of 2-22-09. De mi corazon a tu corazon, from my heart to your heart.

"Thank you, gracias, for the sparks of Hawaiian Aloha floating off to the Chihuahuan desert to celebrate connection in spite of distance throughthe greatest fire there is, the fire of love."
